个修胜解教授(Instruction on Single-Awareness)

In Tibetan: Instruction on Single-Awareness

礼敬圣观世音菩萨!

至诚顶礼大智文殊师利菩萨!

礼敬圣龙树菩萨!

礼敬上师阿伐都帝!

我融合学修次第著此教授。

I pay homage to the Blessed Avalokita,

Bowing in reverence to the Omniscient One.

With homage given to Arya Nagarjuna

And Avadhuti too, I write this instruction

On combined [theory and practice] progress.

自生菩提觉心始,

菩萨常恒善护菩提心,

至获密乘大灌顶,

不离方便智慧二支分。

Now when the Bodhisattva has first produced the thought for

Awakening, and holds it close: until he obtains the great Initiation, his task is twofold: 1) The task of Insight, and 2) The task of Means.

[1]就智慧分而言,

即了知诸法,

无有最初之本源,

万法本源即真实法界。

[1] Now then, as to the Insight: It means knowing that all phenomena are unarisen from the beginning, and from the start are the Realm of True Reality itself.

初修者之智慧修,

至获密乘之灌顶,

夜以继日修真性。

The task of this (Insight) is that the Beginner, until he obtains Initiation, contemplates Thatness continually day and night.

[2]就方便分而言:

即菩提心中

不弃舍一切有情之大悲心,

行身口意之三业,

一切缘为利有情故,

不论其世系或财产。

[2] As for Means, it is the Thought of Awakening [in its aspect of] not neglecting creatures [i.e., Compassion],Its task is all the deeds of body, speech, and mind; there being nothing whatsoever which is not done for the sake of all creatures, regardless of lineage or wealth.

此外

有补特伽罗实我与补特伽罗无我之阶段,即

a)慧力不足之初业菩萨

b)烦恼已断之慧行菩萨。

And this moreover, has stages of objectification and of nonobjectification of creatures; that is, the stages of: [a] the unskilled [bodhisattva] with impaired vision, and [b] of the skilled, whose impairment is removed.

至始至终,

菩萨以慧观摄持修持,

直至亲证法身;

此时,

慧观亦成就般若智慧。

But all the while, he perseveres with Insight in control, until the Truth Body is directly realized; and [Insight] has become Wisdom itself.

此时

慧观即应舍弃,

因行者修习慧观已成就悉地故。

就方便分(大悲)而言,

菩萨无缘大悲愈增胜,

(于一切有情,)

不需外寻力求,

随顺本性,

即能油然而生大悲。

(For then) the task of Insight ceases to exist, because by practicing [Insight] one arrives at the goal.

As for the task of Means [Compassion], it becomes [more & more] objectless, without the seeking, striving, and natural bent of one's instincts.

初业菩萨视某补特伽罗有情为实我,

并由此对受苦之他有情产生悲心。

然而,

当以慧观实修,

此当即所谓之“有情”名言,

从初即不存在或减少。

The beginner-Bodhisattva names [a thing] as "creature" because he [still holds the] existence of a Self-of-Persons, and with that he begets compassion for their suffering. Then when he practices [Insight], his instantaneous naming of this so-called "creature" - which never existed in the first place - diminishes.

就此而言,

初修者(初业菩萨)作是思维:

“除缘起,(众缘)积集,(四大)要素及五尘外,

尚有何它?”

又作是思维:

“此事(译者注:指诸苦)仅由心识强加,并逐渐减少,对初修者其未曾实际存在。”基于此,由诸苦引发悲心。(由执相而生)

In the case of the former, [the beginner], he thinks: "In this [thing]-except for a bit of Dependent Origination, Heaps, Elements, and Sense-fields-what else is there?", and then having thought: "Although these things are only mind-imposed and are diminishing, on the former [level] they never even existed." On that basis, compassion arises for the sufferings

[caused by the objectifying].

于佛之境界,

无实有相真实存在(译者注:原文的意思是无有相不作有相解,从上下文看,意思反了);

如《般若经》云:

“依佛智慧,无一法可见,

何故,依佛之般若慧,无一法可得故。”

All the while, on the Buddha Level there is no object to not objectify; hence it is said in the[Questions of-]Suvikrantivikrami

[Perfection o f Insight Sutra], "The Wisdom of the Blessed Buddha does not see anything, and if you ask why that is so, it is because there is no object for his Wisdom."

若问佛之智慧,

是否实有存在,

圣龙树菩萨对此不承许。

并开示云:

“依佛之教授,

过去心未曾见,

现前心不可见,

未来心亦不可见-

如何能言其自性存在焉?”

(译者注:原文的意思是“如何能言其自性不存在焉?”,按照前后文,意思相反了。)

此是他传承之教授。

But if you ask whether or not his Wisdom existed at that time,

Arya Nagarjuna does not hold it, saying: "All Buddhas (teach) that the mind has not seen, does not see, will not see - how can there be seeing in a nature whose nature does not exist?" And that is the instruction of his lineage.

其次,

则大悲心所生之利益外,

尚有何它作用?

利益他有情乃成就菩提之主要目标。

如龙树云:

“圆满利他主要是为成就菩提圣果。

除诸自觉悟之事外,

我持利他是为成就菩提之果。”

Then again, besides the benefit of others [compassion], what other task did he have? - the benefit of others being the chief result of his desired goal [bodhi]. As Arya Nagarjuna says,

"This excellent benefit of others is held to be the chief result [of bodhi]. Other than things like Awakening itself, I hold these other [benefits] to be results of the goal [bodhi]."

愿此教言,

深入汝之心相续。

于戒胜比丘祈请文里,

我已对此扼要作教授。

于诸大乘经典和龙树诸论,

亦有广大开解。

《个修胜解教授》乃班智达 燃灯吉祥智所编。

May this instruction for entering into Suchness abide in your mind. I have taught it here in summary at the entreaty of Tshulkhrims Rgyal-ba. For a fuller treatment, consult the Mahayana Sutras and the explanations of Nagarjuna. This Instruction on Single-Awareness was composed by the Pandita Dipamkara-Sri-jnana.
